yes, and we are going to keep chasing google algorithms, trying to predict what would be the next change. I actualy thought, before reading your article, that seo became a larger umbrella, harboring in fact web marketing, some design and probably a bit of everything.

[...] Conversion Optimization is simple in theory, you assess the number of people visiting the page divided by the number of people who performed the desired action. Then you assign performance benchmarks that you can track and assess to increase over a specified time. This is more about finesse and no budget will fix a problem of this magnitude on its own.
Decline, I beg to differ. However content creation is part of theming which is largely responsible for relevance. I understand your argument, but fail to see how this statement lacks truth.

"The umbrella of search engine optimization services have become a synthesis of analytics, usability, web design, programming and marketing."

In our world, vying for competitive terms is nothing short of that. Thanks for commenting.

There's a rather annoying trend evolving whereby SEOs co-opt traditional disciplines in the face of a declining market opportunity for what SEO truly is. Saying "good content creation" is SEO is like an entertainment PR Rep saying that "good movie making" is part of public relations. Sure, you need one to have the other, but at it's core content creation has nothing to do with SEO. The same goes for programming, usability, and general web design. Sure, all need to take SEO into account during the process, but the best practices that SEO requires are largely simple to institutionalize or already part of the process.

SEOs are enjoying a heyday that has already started to decline.

Likewise Amad, we are considering using our knowledge and branching into private ventures. I suspect, this will become a growing trend as SEO's will become less dependent on clients and have additional revenue streams to pursue.

I definitely agree with this Jefferey. I recently wrote a post about the "Three Wise Men" of online marketing; Analytics, SEO, and Conversion Optimization. I think SEO has become a springboard for so many other disciplines, and I see some search marketers even branching off. I myself, began in SEO, but have really started getting into the conversion analysis arena which seems to grasp more of my attention. Had it not been for the holistic progression of SEO, I probably wouldn't have ventured into that new territory. Good times ahead. :)
