Global Link Mask Admin Interface

The Link Mask Generator module, which first came out almost exactly a year ago, has been overhauled with a brand new administration interface that lets you create link masks that apply globally across your entire WordPress-powered website.

As in previous versions of SEO Ultimate, Link Mask Generator scans your posts for links and gives you the option of generating an alternate URL that redirects to the “real” URL.

For example, if your post contains a link to www.amazon.com, you can use Link Mask Generator to change that link URL to www.your-website.tld/go/amazon/. When your visitors click the link to go to www.your-website.tld/go/amazon/, they are seamlessly redirected to the original URL at www.amazon.com.

Link masking has two benefits: First, it lets you replace lengthy affiliate URLs with short, clean, internal URL masks (using 301 redirects, which have no search engine penalty). Second, Link Mask Generator automatically generates robots.txt rules that disallow your masked URLs, effectively neutering the juice-flow of the link, without resorting to the rel nofollow attribute. This combination makes Link Mask Generator a perfect tool for affiliate marketers.

The latest releases of SEO Ultimate expand on this existing functionality by adding a new global interface which lets you see all your link masks in one place and which lets you apply a link mask globally instead of just to one post as before.

Just go to the new “Link Mask Generator” menu item under SEO Ultimate’s “SEO” menu in your WordPresss admin to view and edit the alias list. The alias table includes a field for the actual URL (e.g. www.amazon.com), a field for the alias URL (e.g. /go/amazon/), a “test” link that lets you check that the alias URL is working, and an optional “Only on This Post” field that lets you limit the application of the link mask to a specific post (thereby emulating the functionality of the previous version of Link Mask Generator).

If you have an affiliate URL that you use in multiple posts across your entire site, the new version of Link Mask Generator lets you mask all instances of that URL in one fell swoop.

Deeplink Juggernaut & Link Mask Generator Integration

One of the great things about having all your SEO features in one plugin is that the modules can integrate with each other. Deeplink Juggernaut and Link Mask Generator can now work together starting with SEO Ultimate 7.1, allowing you to use link masks as autolinking destinations in Deeplink Juggernaut.

Let’s say you’ve already used Link Mask Generator to mask all your www.amazon.com links with internal /go/amazon/ URLs. Now let’s say you want to autolink all instances of the word “Amazon” to your new /go/amazon/ URL. Just go to the “Add a New Link” section of the “Content Links” tab of Deeplink Juggernaut, type “Amazon” in the “Anchor Text” box, and type “amazon” in the “Destination” box. Then click the /go/amazon/ item that appears in the dropdown beneath the “Destination” box. Then just click Save Changes to add the new autolink.

Now all instances of the word “Amazon” (in our example) will autolink to http://www.your-website.tld/go/amazon/. When a visitor clicks the link, he or she will be silently redirected to the original URL at www.amazon.com.

This conjunction of Deeplink Juggernaut and Link Mask Generator functionality is a perfect combo for affiliate marketers looking to autolink all instances of a relevant keyword to a masked affiliate URL.

More Features, Changes, & Fixes

Those 2 features are the headline additions to the latest versions of SEO Ultimate, but there’s even more worth mentioning:

• Permalink Tweaker now includes a new setting that lets you handle URL conflicts between pages and categories/tags that can arise when you use Permalink Tweaker to remove category/tag URL bases. For example, if you have a category called “Blue Widgets” and a page called “Blue Widgets,” and if you have configured Permalink Tweaker to remove the /category/ portion of your categories’ URLs, then both the page and the category will have the URL of http://www.your-website.tld/blue-widgets/. As of SEO Ultimate 7.2, Permalink Tweaker includes a new “URL Conflict Resolution” setting that lets you choose whether the category or the page should get the URL in case of a conflict.
• In previous versions of SEO Ultimate, modules had multiple help dropdowns (in the upper-right-hand corner of the module admin pages) containing module documentation, such as “Overview,” “FAQ,” “Troubleshooting,” etc. As of version 7.0 and later, SEO Ultimate now uses the new help system of WordPress 3.3 that places all these documentation sections into a single “Help” dropdown with multiple tabs.
• Deeplink Juggernaut’s “Tag Restrictions” setting should now handle nested tags with aplomb. If you’ve configured Deeplink Juggernaut to refrain from autolinking within <h3> tags, for example, this setting will now take effect even if that <h3> tag has a nested <span> tag or <br /> tag. If this bug has been giving you trouble, upgrade to SEO Ultimate 7.2.1 or later and let us know whether the fix is working for you.
• Meta Description Editor now lets you differentiate your meta descriptions on paginated subpages of categories, tags, and pages. For example, you can use Meta Description Editor to automatically tack on “Page 2″ to the end of the meta description of page 2 of a category archive. This new feature helps avoid “duplicate meta description” errors in Google Webmaster Tools.

1. First,  download SEO Ultimate (our free WordPress SEO plugin) you can download our SEO plugin directly from WordPress or simply use your dashboard within WordPress and go to Plugins > Search for SEO > then select Install for SEO Ultimate.
2. Once installed go the module manager.
3. From there you can turn any features on or off that you do not require (for example, I usually turn off the slug optimizer) unless it’s a new blog and I am starting fresh with the slug in the URL optimized (stop words removed). In any case, you can customize which modules (plugins) you enable or silence from the module manager.
4. Click Title Tag Rewriter from the menu.
5. On the left you will see the existing Permalink title for the post or page and next to it is a blank field.
6. In the blank field, simply write your preferred title (you can mass edit up to 100 posts or pages at a time) and then click “save changes”.

The beauty of this module in SEO Ultimate is (a) if you missed the boat on your initial titles (b) if you want to re-theme your posts or pages title to something more conducive to search engine traffic, you can do so without having to load one page at a time and execute this painstaking task.

Keep in mind, the Permalink you had will still show up in the post or page, but the title tag in the html header portion of the document, will reflect the more streamlined / optimal refined title tag, which is what search engines will display in the SERPs (search engine result pages) to viewers.

With a bit of keyword research and an optimized search engine title and meta tag snippet (1) you can rank for dozens or hundreds of additional dormant keyword variations and (2) dial in your titles to garner more traffic on demand.

The first widget ties in with the newly-added Footer Link function of Deeplink Juggernaut. If you’re using a theme with a widgetized footer, SEO Ultimate’s new “Footer Links” widget will let you move your Deeplink Juggernaut footer links from the wp_footer hook section to your widgetized sidebar-footer. This unassuming widget makes it a cinch to smoothly integrate your Deeplink Juggernaut Footer Links into the theme of your choice.

The second widget is called “Siloed Categories,” and lets you supercharge your site with navigation that’s siloed around a taxonomy of your choosing.

On most pages of your site, Siloed Categories functions just like a normal categories widget, except that it only displays your top-level categories. But when you click on one of the categories to go to its archive, Siloed Categories changes into a list of the category’s sub-categories (if any) and the five latest posts filed under that category. When you view a post, Siloed Categories displays the post’s “siblings” that are filed under the same category. Thanks to this linking paradigm, your categories’ link-juice is confined within the current silo instead of leaking out to other category-silos.

(Bonus Tip: To implement category siloing at the URL level on a new WordPress blog, go to your Permalink Settings and set your permalink format to /%category%/%postname%/.)

Although the widget uses categories by default, it provides you with the flexibility of siloing around any taxonomy of your choosing (post tags or custom taxonomies), though for best results, you should silo around a taxonomy in which each post only has one term. (Since posts usually just have one category apiece, category siloing is often ideal.) If you choose to use Siloed Categories, you should also remove any existing “Categories” widgets from your sidebars, since Siloed Categories is intended to replace that functionality.

As always, SEO Ultimate uses a modular system that lets you disable features you don’t want. If for some reason you want to remove these new widgets from your widgets admin screen, just go to Module Manager and disable the “SEO Ultimate Widgets” module.

SEO Ultimate Version 6.5 Released

Existing users of Deeplink Juggernaut know that this autolinking module already gives you two ways to throttle its automatic link-building activity. Now that SEO Ultimate 6.4 adds a third option, you now have these link quantity restriction options at your disposal:

• Limit the number of links per anchor text per post
• Limit the total number of links per post
• Limit the number of links per anchor text across your whole site (NEW!)

That’s right — Deeplink Juggernaut now lets you control how many times your specified anchor texts are converted to links across your entire site.

Let’s say you have 1,000 posts and each of your posts contains your main keyword, which you’d like to link back to your homepage. Even if you were to limit Deeplink Juggernaut to 1 link per anchor text per post, you’d still have 1,000 links pointing back to your homepage, which could very well set off some SEO over-optimization red-flags.

With the new Sitewide Link Limiter, you can easily cap those links at 50, so your main keyword is linked to your homepage only 50 times across your site. As an added bonus, when you have a link cap in place, Sitewide Link Limiter gives preference to your older content so you can harness your aged posts to your SEO advantage without lifting a finger.

Also, Deeplink Juggernaut now refrains from linking within your h1/h2/etc. tags, a behavior which you can control with a new field on the Content Link Settings page.

New Feature: DeepLink Juggernaut Footer Links Module

Footer links are an SEO staple that has been brought up-to-speed with today’s CMS-powered Web thanks to this new plugin-within-a-plugin. We’re not talking plain-vanilla functionality here. Here are some examples of what you can do with the new Footer Linker:

• You want a one-time link from one post to another. Just type the “from” post’s title in the “Link Location” box, select the “from” post from the list, type the “to” post’s title in the “Destination” box, and select the “to” post from the list. Then set the anchor text and the title/nofollow/target options.
• You want to add a site-wide link to your SEO-optimized landing page, but you don’t want the link on your homepage. Here’s how: in the “Link Location” box, type “home,” select “Blog Homepage,” check “Negative match,” and then set the anchor text, destination, and title/nofollow/target options.
• You want to link all posts in a certain category to a specific landing page. In the “Link Location” box, type the category’s name, select it from the dropdown, and check “Match child content.”
• You want to link to a category archive, but not from posts within that category, because your theme already links those posts to the category archive. Just type the category’s name and select it from the list in both the “Link Location” and “Destination” boxes, but for the “Link Location” box, check “Match child content” and “Negative match.”
• You want all guest-posts to link to a certain page on your site. Just type in your username in the “Link Location” box, select it from the “Author Archives” section of the dropdown, check “Match child content” and “Negative match,” and specify the link details.
• You want a sitewide link to one of your tag pages. Just leave “Link Location” blank, type the tag’s name in “Destination,” and select it from the dropdown.

SEO Ultimate Version 6.3: On Page SEO Has Evolved!

The latest updates unleashed in SEO Ultimate Version 6.3 represent another notch in the battle for WordPress SEO plugin supremacy. Each revision could be a stand-alone plugin within itself, but don’t take our word for it, allow me to elaborate on the latest stellar and revolutionary enhancements.

Updates to Deeplink Juggernaut

First up, the plugin has been upgraded with a major revamp to Deeplink Juggernaut, the essential toolkit for automatic internal linkbuilding. When upgrading to SEO Ultimate 6.0 or later, you may notice that the “Destination Type” and “Destination” autolink fields have been replaced with a single “Destination” textbox.

The simplicity of this design masks the under-the-hood functionality of this new interface. The new “Destination” textbox lets you type in a URL like before. However, it also lets you type in the first letters of the name of any object (e.g. post/page/category/tag) on your blog. Once you do, an autocomplete menu appears beneath the textbox with objects that match the letters you typed in. The autocomplete results (similar to Google Instant) are grouped by content type and are sorted alphabetically.

Once the list appears, just click the item you want. You can also use your arrow keys to scroll through the list and press the Enter key to select. Once you do, the object you selected will fill up the “Destination” textbox. To remove the object from the textbox, just click the “X” button on the right side of the box.

As an added bonus, not only does the autocomplete function search the titles of your posts and pages, but the content as well. This is perfect for building links to old posts whose titles you don’t exactly remember, or for building links to posts that contain a specific term.

With this new system, you can use Deeplink Juggernaut to easily hone in on any object on your blog and build links to it with your desired anchor text and link options (nofollow, target blank, title attribute, etc.) Deeplink Juggernaut supports linking to posts, pages, attachments, custom post type items, categories, tags, post format archives, and custom taxonomy terms.

Since these autolinks point to the objects themselves rather than static URLs, if you change the URL of an object on your blog, Deeplink Juggernaut’s autolinks will automatically adjust across your site.

Control Internal Links by Linking within Categories or Tags

This revamp also fixes a few leftover bugs and issues with Deeplink Juggernaut, leaving you with a better-than-ever linkbuilding experience from the best WordPress autolinking system on the planet.

In SEO Ultimate version 6.3 the newly added silo feature allows die-hard advanced SEO types with the ability to truly theme and silo their WordPress environment from the onset to prevent theme bleeding (linking outside of the category/subfolder). For example, since WordPress favors pages to posts and if you have a preferred landing page named the same as your posts cyclical page like domain.com/example is your landing page and your blog’s virtual settings are /%category%/%postname%/ in your blogs > permalinks > settings using the custom feature – then the page named “example” will overwrite your /example/ category page.

What this means in layman’s terms, is your newly crafted preferred landing page (which is sure to convert higher than a cyclical page with 10 posts from the “example category”) can now serve as a beacon to consolidate ranking factor for that category.

Hence, by you assigning a keyword to link within the “example” supporting article and category structure, you do not bleed internal links from those posts to other categories or landing pages outside of the “example” category.

Think of this feature as a link delimiter or internal link governor that harnesses the most theme relevant content and then consolidates it “up the the primary landing page” without losing focus or being diffused from linking to every page in the site. This can potentially eliminate over optimization from internal links as well as allow you to “build it right the first time” by adding another layer of semantic siloing for topical content using this one simple feature.

You can either limit posts to link to internal destinations that share at least one of two elements, a category or post tag or both. So, this way, only the target pages which are earmarked for the internal link get the juice.

This feature is like unleashing another plugin within a plugin as hard coding this type of programming into your WordPress or CMS environment is a task worthy of WordPress core coding bragging rights. Now, you can implement this type of relevant internal linking in a few clicks and merely set-it and forget it when it comes to your website’s internal linking.

Of course, Deeplink Juggernaut still has all the features you already use, such as the ability to:

• Control the maximum number of autolinks added to each post/page as well as the number of times an anchor is linked per page.
• Apply the nofollow attribute on a per-link basis. (Perfect for automatic affiliate links.)
• Exclude specific posts/pages from having links added to them, if desired (e.g. contact pages, the homepage, etc.).
• Import/export your links as CSV files.
• Create links pointing to draft posts that will auto-enable when the post is published!
• Build internal links to your posts from within the WordPress post editor! Use “Instant Post Propulsion” technology to automatically link your old posts to new ones.

But wait, there’s more… that was a feature just added to Version 6.3, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves and cover a few more tweaks from Version 6.1 and 6.2 (which occurred over a a three day code-frenzied blur from our lead developer Mr. John Mastermind Lamansky).

Updates in SEO Ultimate 6.1 Include

• Feature: Added an option to insert the rel="nofollow" attribute into all masked links
• Bugfix: Fixed bug that caused some link masks to disappear when the post was saved
• Bugfix: Fixed an issue with masking links with ampersands

What does this mean to you?

Add nofollow to all aliased affiliate or internal links

Say you are an affiliate and you want to send traffic to another website, but you don’t want to (a) bleed ranking factor to that website or (b) have others skyping your links to use for an allinurl Google search operator “reveal my treasure trove of sites I send traffic to or from”. In which case, you can implement the link mask generator module that implements redirects to an internal folder (which is blocked by robots.txt) and furthermore “nofollowed” to keep your business just that, YOUR business…

The other added benefit of this module is for link-flow sculpting. say for example you have 100 links on the page and you only want 10 to appear as links that are followed by search engines, you can mask the other 90 with their own custom URL (like a bit.ly link) and perform your own URL rewriting and then decide where to send that click once a user engages it.

For search engines, they will ignore this link (as the nofollow is applied) suggesting, this is for humans, and / or commerce, not to pass ranking factor. So, this module serves a vital dual feature for webmasters seeking to gain more control over their site architecture or where they link to monetize their traffic.

What’s New in SEO Ultimate Version 6.3?

In version 6.2 we covered the new tweaks to Deeplink Juggernaut above and for version 6.3, SEO Ultimate now features support the latest feature from Google in the fight against duplicate content – the support of Rel Canonical Http Headers.

For those curious about the SEO Ultimate canonicalizer module and how it works.

• What it does: Canonicalizer improves on two WordPress features to minimize possible exact-content duplication penalties. The <link rel="canonical" /> tags setting improves on the canonical tags feature of WordPress 2.9 and above by encompassing much more of your site than just your posts and Pages.The nonexistent pagination redirect feature fills a gap in WordPress’s built-in canonicalization functionality: for example, if a URL request is made for page 6 of a category archive, and that category doesn’t have a page 6, then by default, depending on the context, WordPress will display a blank page, or it will display the content of the closest page number available, without issuing a 404 error or a 301 redirect (thus creating two or more identical webpages). This duplicate-content situation can happen when you, for example, remove many posts from a category, thus reducing the amount of pagination needed in the category’s archive. The Canonicalizer’s feature fixes that behavior by issuing 301 redirects to page 1 of the paginated section in question.

• Why it helps: These features will point Google to the correct URL for your homepage and each of your posts, Pages, categories, tags, date archives, and author archives. That way, if Google comes across an alternate URL by which one of those items can be accessed, it will be able to find the correct URL and won’t penalize you for having two identical pages on your site.

• How to use it: Just check both checkboxes and click Save Changes. SEO Ultimate will do the rest. Now, just click the third checkbox send rel=”canonical” http headers and that is one less layer of duplicate content you will have to worry about when configuring your on page SEO settings.

While this may be imitated but never duplicated, this WordPress SEO plugin is the real deal when it comes to unleashing the pure on page power of advanced SEO. • Meta Description Editor has a new {excerpt::autogen} variable that lets you autogenerate meta descriptions using the first words of your posts. This can be a huge timesaver, especially if your posts’ first content is already primed for SERP clickthroughs.
• Link Mask Generator has a new options page that lets you change the alias directory from the default of /go/ to a value of your choosing (so you can funnel your links through, for example, the /out/ directory, producing masked URLs like http://www.example.com/out/masked-link/)
• Fans of the Meta Keywords Editor will be happy to hear that this module has been upgraded with new automation functionality that can auto-generate keywords for a post/page based on its categories, tags, and custom taxonomy terms. It can also auto-generate keywords based on the most common words used in the post (you can customize how many words are used). Meta Keywords Editor pulls from Slug Optimizer’s stopwords list to ensure that common/grammatical words are eliminated, leaving only the rich keywords behind.
• Meta Description Editor now includes a mass-editor for categories, tags, and custom taxonomy terms, giving you fine-grained control over the SERP appearance of every taxonomy term on your WordPress blog. This feature enables you to optimize even your term archive pages for SERP performance.
• Meta Robot Tags Editor now gives you fine-grained control over the index/noindex status of each individual category, tag, and custom taxonomy term, instead of forcing you to make a global index/noindex blanket rule for all your categories or all your tags.
• Meta Robot Tags Editor now includes a mass-editor for posts, pages, and custom post types, allowing you to go back through your old content and easily set the index/noindex and follow/nofollow meta tags for each one.
• The new “Nofollow Manager” module lets you set the nofollow attribute on entire swaths of links on your site. Although Google has deprecated the use of nofollow for PageRank Sculpting, if you’re transitioning from another SEO plugin to SEO Ultimate, Nofollow Manager can help you maintain your existing settings if you’d rather take an “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” approach.

SEO Ultimate WordPress SEO Plugin Version 4.8 Released

Since SEO Ultimate was designed on a modular framework,  it’s like having 20 plugins in one and provides the option of disabling or silencing features you don’t require to facilitate the ideal / optimal on page settings.

These modular settings are particularly useful if the theme you’re using has certain features and you don’t need, or if you are more advanced, the modular feature set (controlled by the SEO Ultimate Dashboard) provides even more control for fine-tuning your installation depending on what features you do require for optimal setup.

DeepLink Juggernaut Perfected

The update is to one of my favorite modules “The DeepLink Juggernaut” Module. This module can manage and implement all of your internal linking sitewide or you can toggle on/off the pages you want to exclude (if you do not want autolinks or have created manual links) on a page by page or post by post level.

With SEO Ultimate’s Deeplink Juggernaut you can either upload a CSV file that has all of the destination URL’s in one file, select whether or not the links are do follow or no follow or use the plugins interface to manually add autolinks to select anchor text.

The most recent DeepLink Juggernaut upgrades eliminate a post from (1) linking to itself – if the anchor text/url is suggesting to link from a page that is the target URL (2) limit the number of autolinks per post (not to exceed the ideal number of more than 1 link to every 100 words) i.e if you have a 400 word post then 4 autolinks is ideal as a default sitewide link cap / setting and (3) the ability to limit duplicate keywords from multiple instances of a keyword linking to the same URL (in the event a keyword appears more than one time in a post).

This feature alone is a premium feature found in other paid autolinking / internal linking plugins and is yet another example of the amazing features housed under the hood of SEO Ultimate.
