Using a keyword-rich premium domain for SEO purposes is still the Achilles heel for search engine algorithms to dissuade rankings from rising in the SERPs (search engine result pages) spontaneously.

SEO, Search Engines and Premium Domains

Premium Domains are the Achilles Heel to Search Engine Algorithms

For example, if you a website with the name:

  • books.com
  • drycleaners.com
  • truffles.com

Then ranking for “books”, “dry cleaners” or “truffles” is equivalent to a walk in the park to any other domain online. This is not to imply that you will consistently rank in the #1 position, but the likelihood of doing so increases with the “exact match” correlation to the original root phrase.

The more keywords you add to the domain, the less relevant it becomes (much like a title tag or URL naming convention). From the standpoint of SEO, shorter is better for dialing in a specific type of ranking factor, however pertaining to domains and domain acquisition, the .com keyword specific domains were the first to get purchased from someone who understands the real value of domaining (selling them for a hefty price).

Under this scenario, the grueling disposition of time, links, content and authority are minimized by the mere virtue of the exact match URL metric. Considering that when you have a premium top level domain, you are saving yourself thousands of dollars on SEO; and if you use the same level of tact you would have used otherwise, the results and ROI should be evident in a relatively short period of time.

Premium domain names are hard to come by (as they are usually purchased from organizations or individuals when the web was first established). See references of TLD’s for sale in Domainer’s Magazine.

Tactical Overview: If you have a premium top level domain that is 5 years or older that has keywords in the domain name, your SEO campaign can run allot smoother. However, if you do not have the luxury, what are some of the things you could do otherwise.

  1. Add Hyphens and go for a semantic close-cousin by adding a modifier to see if a close variation is available for sale such as keyword-reviews.com, .net, .org, biz, .mobi, etc. Other modifiers are reports, deals, affordable, talk, etc. such as www.keyword-talk.com, www.keyword-deals.com, then progress by either adding another keyword (until you reach 3 max with hypens) with the .com, .org, .info, .biz, preference.
  2. Use 2-3 word consolidated domain names keyword and modifier like www.pinkiphones.com for someone searching for pink iphones would work well with minimal SEO.
  3. Use keyword-rich sub folders or sub domains (to add a relevant keyword-rich prefix to the domain) and add content to build topical relevance and develop authority for the keywords in question.

There is more than one way to achieve rankings in search engines, some of them require links, content and others such as this can be achieved by the virtue of the power of using exact match keywords in the domain.
